Job summary

The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration is seeking a Senior Lab Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician IV) to join the Office of Materials Technology in Anne Arundel County. This role performs advanced testing of structural materials and ensures compliance with SHA, ASTM, and AASHTO specifications.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
  • Selective Qualification: 2.5 years of the required experience must have involved materials laboratory testing and/or sampling.
  • Preferred: data entry and the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and/or Access; field data collection, data review & analysis or construction inspection & testing; basic math; basic computer skills; communication; teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced testing and evaluations of structural materials (e.g., reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, neoprene rubber, nuts, washers, bricks, concrete blocks, welded materials, timber, sign materials).
  • Maintain and apply specifications and test procedures to assess compliance with SHA, ASTM, and AASHTO standards.
  • Provide quality control oversight of laboratory functions and equipment to meet AASHTO R-18 accreditation requirements.
  • Assist in CCRL and AASHTO resource test sample testing and in development of equipment and training budgets.
  • Assist in nationwide inspection contract database, authorizations, training lower-level technicians in testing per AASHTO, ASTM, SHA specs.
  • Maintain technical records and adapt record systems for computerization; conduct material inspections and sampling; review materials in MMS for accuracy.
  • Conduct annual facility audits and review quality control plans; assist in reviewing monthly inspection contract invoices.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, customers, and the public; communicate effectively; work independently with minimal guidance.
