Job summary

Humana Inc. is seeking a Senior Kafka Developer to design and operate event streaming that connects Team Caliber—the NBA platform's rules engine built in Java and Drools—to the broader decisioning system.

You will own Kafka topics, producers, and consumers handling eligibility, suppression, and decisioning events. This hands-on backend role demands fluent event-driven design, high throughput, and fault-tolerant streaming under production load, with focus on reliability, observability, and secure

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 5+ years of backend software engineering with production Kafka experience.
• Strong Java skills and event-driven service design.
• Knowledge of Kafka internals and distributed systems fundamentals.
• Experience with cloud infra (Azure or equivalent) and containers/Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and own Kafka producers, consumers, and topic strategy.
• Integrate Java/Drools rules engine with upstream/downstream systems.
• Engineer for correctness under load with partitioning, ordering, and retries.
• Build and maintain Java services around the rules engine.
• Profile and tune streaming throughput and latency at scale.
• Instrument streams with logging, metrics, and alerts; ensure security/compliance.
