Job summary

Nubank is seeking a Systems Performance lead to own high‑impact JVM performance investigations across a large-scale, JVM‑based microservice ecosystem. You will optimize CPU and memory footprint, reduce latency, and develop advanced observability tooling.

The role involves close collaboration with the Computing Squad and mentoring engineers in JVM internals. Hybrid work model with in-person collaboration in multiple US locations and long-term infrastructure improvements to stay ahead of demand.

Qualifications

• Deep, low-level knowledge of the JVM including JIT (C1/C2) and class loading.
• Experience tuning GC algorithms (ZGC, G1, Shenandoah) for massive heaps and ultra-low latency.
• OpenJDK contributions to runtime environments are a plus.
• Strong Linux kernel scheduling knowledge (CFS/EEVDF) and kernel-JVM interaction.
• Memory architecture mastery: heap, off-heap, Direct Buffers, memory leaks.
• Advanced diagnostics with Flamegraphs, JFR, eBPF.
• Experience with cgroups and CPU throttling in Kubernetes environments.
• Proven concurrency diagnosis skills and fixing lock contentions.
• Knowledge of AWS performance characteristics.

Responsibilities

• Lead deep-dive investigations to identify systemic bottlenecks in a JVM-based microservices architecture.
• Drive cost and latency improvements via JVM tuning and memory management.
• Build observability tooling using eBPF, JFR, and Flamegraphs for real-time insights.
• Align Linux kernel and JVM scheduling, optimizing threading in Kubernetes.
• Architect scalable infrastructure improvements addressing long-term performance challenges.
• Mentor peers on JVM internals and performance best practices.
• Root cause analysis of complex concurrency issues and memory leaks.
• Collaborate with the Computing Squad to align orchestration with performance goals.
