Job summary

Nu is seeking a Systems Performance lead to optimize a large JVM-based microservices platform. You will conduct deep-dive analyses, tune GC and memory usage, and build tools like Flamegraphs and JFR for real-time insight.

You will bridge Linux kernel internals with the JVM in a Kubernetes environment, driving scalable, cost-efficient performance improvements. Join a team that values ownership, simplicity, and technical excellence while collaborating across our hybrid offices in the US.

Qualifications

• Deep, low-level knowledge of the JVM and JIT concepts.
• Proven GC tuning experience for large heaps and low latency.
• Contributions to OpenJDK or other runtimes are a plus.
• Strong Linux kernel scheduling and JVM integration understanding.
• Memory management across heap and off-heap areas.
• Experience with observability: Flamegraphs, JFR, eBPF.
• Experience with Kubernetes and cgroups for resource isolation.
• Proven concurrency diagnosis and fix delivery.
• Knowledge of AWS and cloud performance characteristics.

Responsibilities

• Lead deep-dive investigations to identify systemic bottlenecks across JVM-based microservices.
• Fine-tune JVM parameters, GC settings, and memory usage to reduce latency and cost.
• Build and maintain advanced observability tooling for real-time insights.
• Bridge Linux kernel and JVM to optimize scheduling and resource isolation in Kubernetes.
• Design scalable infra improvements addressing long-term performance needs.
• Mentor engineers on JVM internals and performance best practices.
• Diagnose root causes of complex concurrency issues and memory leaks.
• Collaborate with the Computing Squad to align orchestration and performance goals.
