Job summary

Nubank is seeking a Senior Systems Performance Engineer to lead deep-dive analyses and optimize a JVM-based microservices stack. You will tune GC, craft advanced observability tooling, and bridge Linux kernel insights with JVM behavior in a Kubernetes environment.

Ideal candidates have OpenJDK experience, strong debugging skills, and a passion for mentoring others while delivering scalable, low-latency infrastructure across our hybrid work model.

Qualifications

• Deep, low-level knowledge of the JVM, incl. JIT, class loading, and intrinsics.
• Expertise in GC algorithms (ZGC, G1, Shenandoah) and tuning for large heaps.
• OpenJDK contributions are a plus and differentiate a candidate.
• Strong Linux kernel scheduling understanding for high concurrency Java workloads.
• Mastery of heap and off-heap memory management and leaks.
• Proficient with Flamegraphs, JFR, and eBPF for diagnostics.
• Experience with cgroups in Kubernetes/EKS and CPU throttling impact.
• Proven ability to diagnose complex concurrency issues and race conditions.

Responsibilities

• Lead deep-dive investigations to resolve systemic bottlenecks in JVM-based microservices.
• Tune JVM and memory settings to reduce latency and infrastructure costs.
• Build and maintain observability tooling for real-time kernel and JVM insights.
• Align kernel and runtime for optimal thread scheduling within Kubernetes.
• Design scalable infrastructure improvements with long-term impact.
• Mentor engineers and promote best practices in performance engineering.
• Root-cause complex issues, including memory leaks and lock contentions.
