Job summary

Paymentology is a global payments company seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and scale Java backend services powering our payments infrastructure. You will lead end-to-end delivery, shape technical strategy, and raise our engineering bar across the organisation.

You will own backend components, APIs, and distributed systems, with a focus on scalable, reliable performance. This role is 100% remote with a mission-driven culture and global collaboration.

Qualifications

• Significant commercial experience with modern Java (Java 15+, moving to 21) in distributed systems and microservices.
• Strong object-oriented programming skills.
• Experience with event-driven architectures or Domain-Driven Design.
• Strong system design experience for scalable, resilient distributed apps; ability to evaluate trade-offs.
• Love for test-driven development (TDD).
• Strong grasp of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and data modeling.
• Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerisation, CI/CD, and IaC.
• Experience in fintech, payments, or high-throughput/regulated domains.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of backend services, distributed systems, and APIs.
• Own features end-to-end (architecture, coding, testing, observability, deployment).
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code following best practices and TDD.
• Break down complex technical work into manageable chunks.
• Work in a collaborative, cross-functional, agile team environment.
• Mentor associate and mid-level engineers to foster technical excellence.
• Identify and deliver technical improvements for performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Participate in incident response and on-call rotations.
