Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s Advanced Light Source (ALS) seeks a Senior Systems Administrator to lead the ALS-IT team and drive strategic direction for systems, networks, and cybersecurity supporting 40+ beamlines and critical facility operations.

You will mentor IT professionals, coordinate with Berkeley Lab IT, and advance modernization efforts while ensuring reliable, secure services enabling world‑class scientific discovery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent with extensive IT experience.
• Proven supervisory experience and leadership of technical staff.
• Strong cybersecurity leadership in enterprise or research settings.
• Deep Windows/Linux knowledge with cross‑platform troubleshooting.
• Experience with virtualization, identity management, and storage.
• Familiarity with NetApp and enterprise networking security.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise the ALS-IT team with coaching and performance management.
• Set strategic IT direction for infrastructure, cybersecurity, and services.
• Develop roadmaps, manage resources, and contribute to budgeting.
• Act as primary cybersecurity advisor for beamsline and controls computing.
• Oversee Windows/Linux environments, AD, virtualization, and automation.
• Manage monitoring, incident response, DR, and high availability for operations.
• Lead disaster recovery planning and business continuity testing.
• Collaborate with ALS leadership and Berkeley Lab IT on solutions.
• Drive Zero Trust initiatives for edge devices and systems.
• Ensure SLAs, procedures, and ticketing support staff reliably.
