The New York City Department of Investigation (“DOI”) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country with a mission of combating municipal corruption. It serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds.

DOI's Squad 1 conducts investigations into corruption, fraud, waste, and other criminal conduct, occurring at or involving the Department of Correction, Department of Probation, and Board of Correction. Squad 1 seeks a Senior Investigative Attorney/Assistant Inspector General who will be primarily responsible for planning, managing, and supervising the Squad's sex crimes investigations, including the drafting or editing of reports and policy and procedure recommendations derived from those investigations. The Senior Investigative Attorney/Assistant Inspector General may also play a limited role in managing or assisting in larger complex investigations into fraud, waste, or other criminal activity. The ideal candidate will have prior experience investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and extensive legal or policy writing experience.

If selected, the candidate will be fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation. In addition, for positions that have a law enforcement and/or investigative function, the candidate's consumer credit history will be reviewed during the background investigation, and as otherwise permitted by NYC Administrative Code 8-107(24)(b)(2)(A).

SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR - 31130

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school; Active bar membership from any of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands; a minimum of three years of recent full-time relevant legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar.

Preferred Skills

  • A minimum five years of experience leading complex investigations such as work as a prosecutor, forensic auditor, or investigator conducting complicated, long-term investigations. Specific experience with investigations into sex crimes is a plus and will make a candidate highly competitive. Demonstrated writing ability, including to prepare detailed written reports and memorandum, and experience editing written work product to a high standard. Candidates should be prepared to provide a writing sample. Demonstrated ability to function independently, with minimal supervision. Possess excellent organizational skills and proven ability to manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with federal, state, and city prosecutors on complex investigations and cases. Strong interpersonal, written, and analytical skills. Demonstrated ethics and sound judgment. Knowledge of New York City government is a plus but not required.
