Job summary

The University of Michigan seeks an Inpatient Coding Specialist to review medical records and assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, ensuring MS-DRG/APR-DRG accuracy and POA indicators. You will work with CDI teams to clarify documentation and maintain compliance with federal guidelines.

Responsibilities include extracting clinical data, researching complex cases, and upholding quality, productivity, and regulatory standards within an academic medical center environment.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in health information management or RHIT/RHIA eligible with credential within six months.
• Certification must be maintained through continuing education.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, treatment methods, patient data collection, and coding classification systems.

Responsibilities

• Extract, review, and analyze clinical information and translate data into appropriate codes.
• Lead to correct MS-DRG/APR-DRG assignments and ensure POA indicators.
• Verify discharge disposition and POA indicators to support coding.
• Abstract required data per facility specifications and exercise judgment on case complexity.
• Research complex diagnoses/procedures to apply correct ICD-10-CM/PCS codes.
• Collaborate with CDI team to clarify documentation with physicians for accurate coding.
• Ensure data reporting, reimbursement, and regulatory compliance; maintain quality and productivity.
