Job summary

IS4S, a defense-focused engineering firm in Auburn, AL, seeks a Principal Inertial Navigation and IMU Subject Matter Expert to drive development, integration, evaluation, and qualification of navigation solutions for military aviation.

The successful candidate will lead technical assessments of IMU technologies, support lifecycle activities from requirements through fielded systems, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure mission-ready performance in GPS-denied environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, aerospace, mechanical engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or related field.
• 10+ years of experience with IMUs, inertial navigation systems, or related tech.
• Proficiency with navigation-grade and high-performance IMUs.
• Experience with GPS/GNSS-aided navigation and navigation-filter concepts.
• Ability to interpret technical requirements, test procedures, and verification criteria.
• Strong technical writing, presentation, and customer-facing communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical SME for inertial sensors, IMUs, and navigation systems.
• Lead lifecycle activities from requirements to field support.
• Evaluate IMUs for suitability across manned aircraft platforms.
• Lead IMU selection activities, market research, and trade studies.
• Assess gyro/accelerometer technologies, calibration approaches, and navigation performance.
• Analyze test/flight data to identify root causes and corrective actions.
• Support integration with GPS/GNSS, processors, filters, and mission computers.
• Develop and review requirements, specs, interfaces, verification criteria, and test plans.
• Plan lab, hardware-in-the-loop, ground, environmental, and flight-test activities.
• Mentor engineering teams and communicate risks and solutions.
