Chief Maintenance Manager

Basic Function

Works with the Chief Maintenance Manager to support the Maintenance Team and Initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

This position will deliver advanced maintenance support to hatchery maintenance departments across multiple sites, including off-grid locations. Diagnose complex issues, make repairs, and offer expert recommendations to optimize system performance and reliability. Use and train staff in PWSAC’s CMMS system.

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain complex mechanical and electrical systems across multiple hatchery sites; offer expert guidance and recommendations to site staff
  • Deliver hands‑on training and technical instruction to maintenance staff
  • Work is performed across eight locations, primarily including both on‑grid and remote off‑grid sites
  • Respond to and resolve maintenance issues as assigned, providing remote and onsite support when needed
  • Work closely with contractors and vendors on scheduling repairs where additional expertise may be necessary
  • Train staff in the effective use of PWSAC’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Audit Preventative Maintenance (PM’s) work orders in CMMS and edit as per assigned schedule
  • Orient new Maintenance staff as assigned and provide appropriate training
  • Uphold and enforce PWSAC safety standards; initiate “All‑Stop” when unsafe conditions are observed
  • Provide short‑term maintenance coverage for hatchery sites during staff vacancies
  • Complete and submit detailed progress reports, maintenance logs, and other documentation as required
  • Potential for work to be performed on company‑owned landing craft and provide short‑term deck crew coverage during vacancies
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, commercial structures, and other facilities
  • Understanding of off‑grid power and housing systems, plumbing, hydraulics, communications (alarms), water systems, and HVAC
  • Skilled in various welding techniques
  • Understanding of remote infrastructure challenges, including off‑grid power systems, water systems, and communications
  • Ability to become proficient in PWSAC CMMS system within 30 days
  • Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for complex industrial and residential systems
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations (e.g., OSHA) and environmental compliance standards
  • Skilled in interpreting technical manuals and schematics
  • Proficient knowledge of Hazmat material handling, including 29CFR
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer software, particularly Microsoft Office suite, and proficient in computer use
  • Competent in documenting maintenance activities and generating reports
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks across multiple sites and responsibilities
  • Ability to work with a high degree of integrity, dependability, initiative, and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain and develop solid working relationships with contractors and vendors
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
Essential Functions
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods
  • Manual dexterity to operate tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights (e.g., ladders, scaffolding)
  • Visual acuity to read schematics, gauges, and perform detailed inspections
  • Hearing sufficient to perceive and interpret audio input for instruction, repairs, and to identify hazards
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, gloves, and safety glasses
  • Work performed both in an office and/or construction, industrial, and hatchery site setting – may be exposed to inclement and cold seasonal weather, marine conditions, and hostile wildlife.
  • Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, and industrial machinery
  • Work in varying temperatures, including hot, cold, and humid environments
  • May be required to work in remote or outdoor locations
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous materials (with proper safety protocols)
  • Ability to respond to emergency maintenance needs, including off‑hours and on‑call shifts
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language

Minimum qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 7–10 years of hands‑on experience in industrial maintenance, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems
  • Intermediate welding skills required, aluminum preferred
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Current driver’s license with a clear driving record for the last 36 months prior to hire preferred
  • Ability to enroll in the USCG consortium preferred
  • CMMS experience preferred
  • Alaska remote site work experience preferred
