Position Overview

Job Responsibilities

This role will be staffed as a Senior Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) Responder (Transportation Worker IV) in the Division 14 IMAP Unit. Responsibilities include operation of an IMAP vehicle, traffic control deployments, route surveillance, incident response, removal of disabled and abandoned vehicles, incident/congestion management, routine motorist assistance, debris removal, and communication with dispatch and first responder agencies. The role does not involve direct supervision but may include leading or training other responders. Critical thinking, independent work, and quick decision-making under pressure are essential.

Physical and Technical Requirements

Must be able to perform routine tasks, lift heavy objects, work in various weather conditions, and proficiently use computer applications such as CAD, SAP, Outlook, Excel, and Word. Basic first aid and CPR training are required, along with the ability to work outside normal hours during incidents. Skills include maneuvering the IMAP vehicle in all conditions, effective communication, and safe driving practices.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong communication skills, patience, and training aptitude
  • Defensive driving skills and safe driving habits
  • Ability to respond quickly around moving vehicles and lift at least 50 pounds
  • Knowledge of fire safety, small tools, minor repairs, traffic control devices, and radio systems
  • Understanding of traffic control dynamics based on roadway features and weather
Experience and Qualifications

Relevant experience in emergency response, medical services, law enforcement, fire, inspection, arson, correctional, security, highway maintenance, or automotive repair will be considered. Applicants must meet education and KSA requirements, demonstrating knowledge of roadway operations, incident command, safety policies, and effective communication. Supervisory experience is also valued.

Additional Requirements

Successful candidates must pass safety, traffic management, and field assessments, and maintain current CPR and NCDOT IMAP certifications within 6 months of employment. The role requires independent decision-making, knowledge of fire safety, traffic control, and communication systems, and the ability to operate and maintain an IMAP truck. Uniform grooming, personal hygiene, and safety toe shoes are mandatory.

Qualifications
