Venmo's identity infrastructure anchors trust, safety, and compliance across all transactions. This Sr. Staff Software Engineer role offers ownership of a high-stakes domain with PayPal-scale resources and the speed of a product beloved by users.

You will be a subject matter expert, driving robust, scalable systems, and communicating complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical partners.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience, focusing on identity, authentication, or security-critical systems at scale.
• Deep expertise in identity protocols: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, FIDO2/WebAuthn.
• Proven track record shipping large-scale distributed systems and leading technical strategy across teams.
• Hands-on backend experience (Python/Java/Go) and cloud infrastructure (AWS).
• Experience translating regulatory requirements (KYC/AML/GDPR/PCI) into engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for Venmo's identity platform, including authentication and fraud risk systems.
• Collaborate with PayPal's platform and security teams on shared identity standards.
• Lead architectural reviews and define engineering standards for scale and security.
• Mentor senior engineers and influence team thinking through design docs and code reviews.
• Address regulatory and risk requirements while maintaining performance and developer experience.
