Senior HV/BESS Estimation Manager
Location: Ankeny, IA (Hybrid). Remote available.
Position Type: Permanent, Full‑Time. FLSA Status: Exempt.
Job Overview
Senior HV/BESS Estimation Manager leads a team of estimators to deliver accurate cost and resource estimates for utility‑scale solar and BESS projects, producing firm bid documents and optimizing margins.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of estimators, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define project requirements.
- Develop and implement estimation strategies to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Oversee preparation of detailed cost estimates for HV substation and BESS components.
- Analyze project scopes, drawings, and other documents to determine accurate cost drivers.
- Validate subcontractor bids and quotations; perform take‑offs and risk assessments.
- Develop resource plans, optimize allocation, and track labor productivity.
- Identify and mitigate estimation risks, conduct sensitivity analysis.
- Prepare bid proposals for RFPs and ITBs, ensuring competitiveness and compliance.
- Maintain vendor and supplier relationships, negotiate pricing, and manage performance.
- Review estimates for accuracy and implement quality assurance processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant technical certificate; alternatively 6+ years relevant experience.
- 8+ years experience in estimation and project management, with at least 3 years in utility‑scale solar, HV, or BESS.
- Background in commercial construction, electrical supply, or power plant engineering.
- Strong understanding of utility solar and battery storage installation and best practices.
- Proficiency with estimation software (HCSS, HeavyBid, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite, Smartsheet, Procore.
- Excellent oral and written communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
- Proven leadership and management abilities, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Physical Demands
- Mostly standing and walking up to 90% of an 8-10 hour day.
- Move/Traverse: frequent bending, standing, stooping, walking.
- Carry up to 50 pounds.
- Drive up to 25% of the time.
- Operate equipment and climb stairs as needed.
Work Environment
- Professional office or construction site setting.
- Noise level ranging from low to high depending on location.
- Flexibility to work evening or night shifts.
