The Riverside Research Engineering and Support Solutions (ESS) directorate conducts Research and Development (R&D) of cyber-physical attacks against embedded systems. As a Senior Hardware Security Research Engineer you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of research engineers and scientists on a range of microelectronics research projects. You'll work directly with a team of embedded system security research subject matter experts (SME), the senior Principal Investigator, and Program Manager to support various project-specific research scope and deliverables providing value to our customers. The position is in Beavercreek OH and requires a Top Secret security clearance. Remote work is not available for this position. Travel is not expected to exceed two to four times a year.
* Conduct research in the application of non-invasive side channel analysis (SCA) for problems within microelectronic hardware security
* Analyzes secure architectures to identify vulnerabilities
* Develop whitepapers and presentations to communicate research findings
* Contributes to proposals for new research in similar and/or related technology areas
* Work with Program Manager and Principal Investigator to plan, lead, and execute technical resource application to project; manage and communicate deliverable status and timelines
* Interacts with third-party vendors to collect appropriate source information
* Attends conferences to understand new attacks and protections
* Provide technical mentorship to junior researchers supporting your programs
Required Qualifications
* Secret clearance required to start, but must be able obtain Top Secret security clearance and all required program access approvals
* Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., computer engineering, electrical engineering, statistics, computer science, mathematics, physics, or other STEM fields) and 8 years' experience, or Master's Degree in a related discipline and 6 years' experience, or 3 years' experience with a PhD in a related discipline
* Understanding of implementation attacks including side-channel, glitching, etc.
* Experience with Verilog, VHDL, or SystemC
* Experience designing or working with security features of FPGAs or ASICs
* Demonstratable understanding of cryptography implementation in embedded technologies including microcontrollers, FPGAs, ASICs, and related technologies.
* Experience bare-metal programming microcontrollers or microprocessors
* Proficiency in C, C++, or Python
* Experience presenting technical material to both technical and non-technical audiences
* Ability to manage timelines, product delivery, and product quality for research projects
* Willing to work in a secure US Government facility
* Interest in solving open-ended research challenges
* Willing to travel 2-4 times per year
Desired Qualifications
* Active DoD Top Secret (TS) or equivalent US Government security clearance
* Strong understanding of cryptographic algorithms and protocols
* Experience implementing side-channel countermeasures
* Understanding of sub-100 nm CMOS and FinFET device fabrication, assembly, and packaging including 3DICs
* Experience working in an R&D environment solving open-ended problems
* Experience in project management including scheduling and reporting
* Experience developing and presenting research papers and presentation in relevant subject area publications or conferences
* Experience developing research proposals
* Experience using revision control software
* Understanding of information theory and its application to cryptographic algorithms
* Understanding of signal processing is highly desired
