Job description

MultiSensor AI (MSAI) is seeking a hands-on hardware generalist.

We are looking for an engineer with strong electrical and mechanical engineering fundamentals and experience integrating sensors and hardware systems. You will select components, design and build multi-sensor systems (thermal, infrared, optical gas imaging, visual, acoustic, vibration), develop enclosures that handle environmental stresses, interface systems with the MSAI Hub and MSAI Connect platforms, debug hardware/software issues, support lab work, and coordinate production readiness (BOM and manufacturing).

Work Schedule

Full-time, standard hours. First 2 months in Beaumont, TX and then can be partially remote.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sensor integration and calibration: Design and build assemblies that integrate infrared cameras, optical gas imaging, visual, acoustic, and vibration sensors into MSAI’s edge-processing hub. Source components, develop test fixtures and calibration procedures, and validate accuracy.
  • Mechanical and environmental design: Design and validate enclosures and mounting systems that withstand real-world environmental conditions (temperature, vibration, humidity, dust). Perform mechanical simulations or analyses as needed to ensure reliability, serviceability, and thermal management.
  • Edge gateway integration: Configure and deploy the MSAI Hub (IP65 edge gateway) that collects and processes data from multiple sensor types. Ensure up to 7 PoE sensors are networked and AI/ML detection models run locally for instant detection. Maintain power, network, and environmental requirements for reliable field operation.
  • IoT protocols and software: Implement hardware interfaces (Ethernet/PoE, Wi-Fi, cellular, serial), embedded firmware, and edge-to-cloud data pipelines. Understand PLC/DCS/SCADA integration and assist with software components that feed data into the MSAI Connect platform.
  • Lab support and collaboration: Work with the lab engineer to test new sensors, run experiments, collect performance data, and maintain lab equipment and safety protocols. Provide clear documentation and training as a collaborative partner.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving: Debug hardware and software issues across sensors, edge gateways, and cloud interfaces. Use strong analytical skills to identify root causes and implement fixes quickly.
  • Production coordination: Assist with bill of materials (BOM) development, sourcing, and vendor selection. Work with manufacturing partners to ensure builds meet design specifications and reliability standards. Provide input on DFM and support field deployments.
  • Customer-focused mindset: Act with urgency, own outcomes, and collaborate across teams to deliver reliable systems that detect issues early and prevent downtime.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering field.
  • 5–7 years of experience in hardware design, test, and integration.
  • Hands-on experience with vibration sensors and infrared cameras (thermal imaging), analog/digital interfaces, and calibration.
  • Experience designing enclosures or assemblies that address temperature, vibration, and environmental variables.
  • Familiarity with IoT hardware protocols (Ethernet/PoE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Modbus, MQTT, LoRa, or cellular).
  • Embedded systems programming (C/C++, Python, RTOS) and ability to write scripts to interface hardware with cloud APIs.
  • Ability to read schematics, create wiring diagrams, and perform board-level debugging.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to work across hardware and software.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience deploying edge AI/ML models or working with embedded GPUs.
  • Knowledge of vibration analysis, thermography, or environmental testing for condition monitoring.
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA) and integration with CMMS software.
  • Experience with predictive maintenance or reliability engineering projects.
Culture Fit
  • MSAI values people who act with urgency, take accountability, and speak up. We build technology that helps industries operate longer, safer, and stronger, and we’re looking for engineers who think boldly and solve complex problems in a fast-moving environment that combines a 30-year legacy in infrared sensor innovation with startup energy.
