Job summary

Atom Computing is seeking a hands-on Principal Hardware Engineer to lead the control system hardware for our quantum computer. You will architect and implement high‑speed mixed‑signal boards, manage FPGA/processor choices, and drive DFM for scalable production in a Boulder startup environment.

You will collaborate with quantum engineers and software teams, own vendor relationships, and mentor junior engineers while delivering robust, testable hardware from concept through initial bring-up.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
• 10+ years of postgraduate experience in board-level analog and digital circuit design (Altium preferred).
• Experience in full design cycle from concept to bring-up.
• Ability to work in a fast-growing startup environment and collaborate with diverse teams.
• Proficiency with electronic test equipment for bring-up and debugging.

Responsibilities

• Design high level architectures for instruments and PCBAs, including FPGA/processor selection and power/clocking schemes.
• Collaborate with quantum engineers to define design requirements.
• Board-level schematic capture and PCB layout in Altium for custom control hardware.
• Prepare detailed specifications and review schematics/layouts.
• Participate in bring-up, verification, and testing of control system hardware with FPGA, firmware, and software teams.
• Manage relationships with contract electronics manufacturers and suppliers for DFM and scaling.
• Mentor teammates in hardware design.
