Job summary

Atom Computing, Inc. is seeking a hands-on Principal Hardware Engineer to lead the architecture and deployment of custom electronic assemblies for the control system of our quantum computer. This position is based in Boulder, Colorado.

You will design high-level system architectures, collaborate with quantum engineers, perform schematic capture and PCB layout in Altium Designer, and drive bring-up, testing, and DFM strategies while mentoring the hardware team.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of board-level analog and digital circuit design experience, preferably with Altium Designer.
• Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work in a fast-growing startup environment.
• Ability to communicate with a diverse team of experimental physicists, hardware, and software engineers.
• Experience in a full design cycle from concept to board bring-up.

Responsibilities

• Design high-level system architectures for instruments, including multiple PCBAs and FPGA/processor selection.
• Collaborate with quantum engineers to define design requirements and solutions.
• Board-level circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout in Altium Designer for custom control hardware.
• Prepare detailed technical specifications and review schematics and layout.
• Participate in bring-up, verification, and testing with firmware and software teams.
• Own relationships with contract electronics manufacturers and drive DFМ strategies for production and scaling.
• Mentor other hardware engineers on the team.
