Job summary

Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Behavioral Health/Develop seeks a Senior Grounds Worker at Catawba Hospital. The role covers routine lawn and landscaping maintenance, snow/ice removal, and completing maintenance work orders to ensure safe access and compliant facilities.

Candidate will operate mowers and heavy equipment, follow written and oral instructions, and perform heavy manual labor as part of skilled trades tasks. Healthcare setting experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Ability to physically perform duties and work the scheduled hours, including on-call on a rotating basis.
  • Working knowledge of ground maintenance and ability to drive and operate mowers, tractors, heavy equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of installation, repair and maintenance practices in related trades including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical repair, painting, HVAC/refrigeration repair, and grounds keeping.
  • Skill in using diagnostic tools, instruments and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform repairs and maintenance tasks, heavy manual labor, and work from heights.

Job Duties

Performs routine lawn and landscaping maintenance, including mowing, trimming, mulching, weeding, and maintaining sidewalks, parking lots, roadways, and landscaped areas around the hospital and outlying buildings. Completes routine and emergency corrective and preventive maintenance work orders within established timeframes and in accordance with applicable safety, regulatory, and building codes and standards. Performs snow and ice removal from sidewalks, parking lots, entrances, and roadways as needed to maintain safe access to the facility.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to physically perform duties and ability to work the scheduled hours, including on-call on a rotating basis.
  • Working knowledge of ground maintenance, ability to drive and operate mowers, tractors, heavy equipment, etc., ability to receive and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Working knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance practices, equipment, and materials used in the assigned skilled trades areas including, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical repair, painting, HVAC/refrigeration repair, and/or grounds keeping, and some knowledge of the principles and practices of other trades areas.
  • Working skill in the use of a variety of diagnostic tools, instruments and equipment, hand and power tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of repairs and maintenance tasks in the assigned trades and utilities areas, to perform heavy manual labor, and to work from heights.
Additional Considerations

Previous experience in a healthcare setting is highly desired.
