Job summary

Ideal candidates will have 4–8+ years of accounting experience in nonprofits, solid grant compliance knowledge, and advanced Excel skills.

  • Prepare grant billings, reimbursements, drawdowns, and regular financial reports.

Job description

Atlantic Group is hiring a Senior Grant Accountant for our client, supporting the financial management and compliance of a diverse portfolio of federal, state, local, and private foundation grants. This role is responsible for post-award grant accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and audit support while partnering closely with program leadership to ensure accurate grant administration. The ideal candidate has strong nonprofit accounting experience, expertise in grant compliance, and enjoys working in a mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities as the Senior Grant Accountant:

  • Grant Accounting: Manage the full financial lifecycle of assigned grants from award setup through closeout while ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements and organizational policies.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare grant billings, reimbursement requests, drawdowns, and monthly, quarterly, and annual grant financial reports.
  • Grant Compliance: Monitor restricted funding, cost allocations, indirect cost calculations, and budget-to-actual performance while maintaining supporting documentation for compliance.
  • General Ledger Accounting: Reconcile grant activity to the general ledger, investigate variances, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Audit & Budget Support: Assist with Single Audits, external financial audits, grant proposal budgets, budget modifications, and required federal, state, and foundation reporting.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with program leadership to monitor grant utilization, identify process improvements, and strengthen financial reporting and internal controls.

Qualifications for the Senior Grant Accountant:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • Experience: 4-8+ years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years supporting grants, nonprofit organizations, or sponsored programs, is required.
  • Industry Knowledge: Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, restricted fund accounting, federal and state grant compliance, and Single Audit requirements is required.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required. Experience with Sage Intacct, Blackbaud, MIP, NetSuite, Workday, or similar accounting systems is preferred.
  • Skills & Attributes: Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with exceptional attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple grants and deadlines, and a collaborative approach to supporting mission-driven financial operations.
