Job summary

Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking an Accountant III to maintain accurate financial records, prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, and support month-end and year-end activities within the General Accounting team.

The ideal candidate has a strong accounting background, attention to detail, and the ability to work across departments to resolve discrepancies and improve processes. The position offers a hybrid schedule in the Richmond area with competitive compensation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field.
• Five years of increasing responsibility in accounting, including experience in multiple accounting disciplines and reconciling transactions.
• Experience using large databases, accounting and financial management systems, and web-based applications.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes GL reconciling items and records VNAV activity into the general ledger.
• Prepares journal entries for subsystem activity and year-end accruals.
• Assists external auditors and supports annual financial statements.
• Manages monthly close process and prepares closing entries.
• Develops tools and reports to improve reconciling items and streamline processes.
