Senior GIS Analyst

GPA Consulting, a multidisciplinary firm that specializes in environmental planning, biology studies, and historic preservation, is looking for a qualified Senior GIS Analyst to join our diverse team of highly skilled professionals. Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 8 years of geospatial analysis and GIS mapping; or
  • Eight years of experience directing or conducting GIS analysis, at least one year of which must have been preparing maps and graphics in support of environmental impacts analysis in California (a Master’s Degree in GIS may be substituted for two years of the general experience); a GIS certificate may substitute for six months of experience; and
  • Equivalent to graduation from college in the Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Geography, Planning, or a closely related field.
Job Description

The chosen candidate’s responsibilities include preparing graphic representations of land areas and other physical resources that can be used for analysis by utilizing GIS software systems that produce complex maps and reports. The position will also include performing geographical research and collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting spatial data. In addition to GIS skills, this position requires effective communication skills and a knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations. This position includes working across multidisciplinary staff and sub-consultants to support their comprehensive environmental studies, acting as an in-house consultant performing mapping activities to support environmental analysis or to graphically communicate the presence or analysis of a wide variety of environmental resources.

Responsibilities include:
  • Working as an interdisciplinary team member;
  • Creating maps and graphics using GIS software and related equipment;
  • Ensuring quality and consistency of maps, graphics, data and other products generated in GIS;
  • Meeting with users to define data needs, project requirements, required outputs, or to develop applications;
  • Conducting research to locate and obtain existing databases;
  • Gathering, analyzing, and integrating spatial data from staff and determining how best the information can be displayed using GIS;
  • Compiling geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps;
  • Analyzing spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports;
  • Designing and maintaining a data library for company-wide GIS resources;
  • Entering or creating new map data through manual digitization or other means as project needs require;
  • Analyzing geographic relationships among varying types of data;
  • Preparing metadata and other documentation;
  • Operating and maintaining GIS system hardware, software, plotters, and printers;
  • Presenting information to users and answering questions;
  • Retrieving stored maps;
  • Coordinating resources for timely project delivery;
  • Participating in regular team meetings to track the progress of work products and deliverables;
  • Keeping current with the latest technology and recent developments in the GIS industry;
  • Managing GIS software, data, and licenses for multiple users;
  • Providing technical support for GIS Analysts and other GIS users; and
  • Keeping up with the latest technology and recent developments in the industry.
Other Requirements

The ideal candidate will also:

  • Understand general principles and techniques and statistical analysis;
  • Possess communication skills for purposes of data gathering and effective coordination with internal and external clients in relation to data needs;
  • Understand best practices and data standards for spatial data as established by relevant State and Federal Agencies;
  • Have knowledge of various methods for describing the location and distribution of land, sea, and air masses including their physical locations, relationships, and characteristics;
  • Solve problems using the GIS suite of tools;
  • Convey GIS/Spatial information to non-GIS technical staff through effective written, oral, and cartographic communication tools;
  • Work effectively with others as an interdisciplinary team member;
  • Solicit necessary expertise to complete environmental studies or meet project goals as they pertain to GIS;
  • Have a reliable mode of transportation, and valid California Driver’s License and Automobile Insurance and be a driver in good standing with the California Department of Motor Vehicles;
  • Be organized and efficient with time management;
  • Be flexible, willing to switch tasks often and maintain a high level of availability;
  • Be trustworthy and follow directions;
  • Be available during GPA’s regular working hours;
  • Exercise good judgement when making decisions;
  • Exhibit strong business ethics; and
  • Positively reflect the GPA Brand.
Physical Requirements
  • Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift; carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and coordination including use of a computer keyboard;
  • May be required to travel by air; and
  • Must be able to multi-task and work amid frequent interruptions.
Additional Skills Desired
  • ESRI Software Proficiency: Proficiency with ESRI software, particularly the ArcGIS suite, including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Pro;
  • GIS-CAD data interoperability and integration skills; and
  • Field Data Collection Support: Mobile data collection, processing, and integration (Field Maps, Survey123, Trimble GPS applications).
