Senior Geotechnical Engineer Job Description

The Certerra – Black Eagle Consulting Senior Geotechnical Engineer provides assistance to the Division Manager in the areas of field exploration, laboratory testing analysis, report preparation, and construction oversight related to engineering projects. This position may require fieldwork, limited travel, and occasional overnight stays. Our work environment is approximately 80% office and 20% field work, in all types of weather. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and excited to explore our region as well as work in a fast-paced industry with potential for growth.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 10+ years of geotechnical engineering design experience
  • ABET-accredited engineering degree such as civil, geological, or mining engineering, or similar
  • Previous experience working in a geotechnical engineering and materials testing environment
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification
  • Valid driver's license suitable for company insurance requirements
Qualifications

  • ACI Concrete Field-Testing Grade 1 Certification
  • NAQTC Certification (sampling & density, aggregates, asphalt)
  • Nuclear density gauge certification

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily with the Division Manager
  • Perform geotechnical field investigations, laboratory testing, and construction oversight
  • Prepare bids and estimates for investigations
  • Oversee and train junior staff
  • Conduct pre-construction meetings with agencies and owners
  • Review and compile laboratory and field test results, perform analyses, and prepare reports
  • Lead field exploration, laboratory data analysis, and report writing for regional projects
  • Manage field exploration activities, including boring layout, utility clearance, supervision of drilling, logging, and testing
  • Coordinate geophysical investigations such as refraction microtremor and seismic refraction
  • Participate in professional development and local engineering groups
  • Provide inspection and oversight of grading, earthwork, and foundation installation
  • Perform geotechnical analyses including soil classification, slope stability, foundation design, and seismic hazard evaluation
  • Review project invoices and manage budgets
  • Develop and submit Change Orders for scope or budget adjustments
