Job summary

WSP in Boston, MA seeks a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join the Geotechnical and Tunneling Team. The role involves field observation, geotechnical design for bridges, tunnels, and underground structures, and drafting reports and design documents.

You will collaborate with multiple disciplines, coordinate data collection and analysis, and contribute to projects across New England. A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with geotechnical focus and 5–7 years of experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree Civil Engineering with concentration in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering.
• 5 to 7 years of relevant experience.
• Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering and related disciplines.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GeoSlope, Plaxis, Settle, LPILE, GROUP, GRLWEAP, SEEP/W.

Responsibilities

• Perform/coordinate field observation and inspections of subsurface investigations in soils and rock.
• Design and analyze geotechnical systems for bridges, buildings, tunnels, and underground structures.
• Prepare/draft geotechnical memoranda, data reports and design reports.
• Assist in report and contract document preparation.
• Collaborate with disciplines and project partners.
• Coordinate geotechnical work in New England and other areas.

Job description

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for our Geotechnical and Tunneling Team!

This position can sit out of the following WSP offices:

• Boston, MA
• North Providence, RI
• Glastonbury, CT
• Worcester, MA
• Shelton, CT
• Merrimack, NH
• Other WSP offices throughout New England can be considered.

Job Duties

• Perform/coordinate field observation and special inspection of subsurface investigations in soils and rock
• Perform geotechnical engineering design and analyses for bridges, buildings, tunnels, underground structures, and retaining walls under minimal supervision of senior engineers
• Prepare/draft geotechnical memoranda, data reports and design reports
• Perform/coordinate field observation and special Inspection of geotechnical construction
• Assist task leaders in preparation of reports and Contract Documents
• Collaborate with other disciplines and project partners
• Assist to develop and coordinate geotechnical work in New England and other areas
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
• Determine well-defined methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, soil/water/sludge/rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
• Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis of rock and soil environmental data, and reporting.
• Determine well-defined methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, soil/water/sludge/rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
• Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis of rock and soil environmental data, and reporting.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering, or a closely-related field
• 5 to 7 years of relevant experience
• Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering and working knowledge of related disciplines (Structures, Civil, and/or Environmental)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GeoSlope, Plaxis, Settle, LPILE, GROUP, GRLWEAP, SEEP/W, RockSciences Software, etc), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and other tools.
• Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in work environment
• Ability and willingness to travel and perform field work
• Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
• Upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering.
• Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
• Prior design and/or construction experienceof highway, bridge, building, and underground projects.
• Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards
• Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
• 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120).
• Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
• A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
