Job summary
Cotswold Archaeology is seeking a Senior Geomatics Officer to lead large, complex geomatics projects across the organisation. Based in one of our UK offices (Andover, Cirencester, Milton Keynes or Suffolk), you will provide expert guidance in archaeological survey, GIS, reality capture and digital workflows, mentoring junior staff and shaping geomatics standards.

Qualifications
- Degree, postgraduate qualification or more than 5 years' experience in Archaeology/Geomatics/Surveying or related discipline
- Significant experience of archaeological field survey and the handling, management and interpretation of spatial data
- Experience ensuring the successful storage, management, documentation and archiving of geospatial datasets in accordance with organisational standards
- Extensive experience using GNSS and Total Station survey equipment
- Experience of taking responsibility for large or complex pieces of work, including the development of survey methodologies and management of spatial data workflows
- Considerable experience of GIS, particularly ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, mobile GIS capabilities and associated geospatial workflows
- Experience with CAD for digitisation and manipulation of archaeological data
- Membership of CIfA or other relevant professional body
Responsibilities
- Contribute towards the corporate geomatics strategy and support the development of departmental objectives, standards and working practices
- Participate in geomatics training programmes, mentoring initiatives and professional development activities
- Provide technical advice regarding equipment, software and technology requirements and contribute information to annual equipment and software planning
- Offer technical advice on geospatial requirements across the organisation, including survey methodologies, data standards, project designs, tenders and geomatics deliverables
- Act as technical lead on large, complex or strategically significant geomatics projects
- Ensure the successful and safe conduct of archaeological survey, digital field recording and site-based data capture activities
- Ensure collection, processing, management, QA and archiving of geomatics data and metadata
- Maintain, configure and secure geomatics hardware and software
- Lead QA procedures relating to survey data, GIS datasets, CAD outputs and digital deliverables
- Undertake archaeological survey using GNSS, Total Stations and other appropriate technologies
- Process and manage photogrammetric, LiDAR and other reality capture datasets
- Support the development and use of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and associated geospatial applications
- Digitise, manipulate and present archaeological and spatial data, including external datasets
- Contribute to development of GIS, CAD, spatial analysis, mobile GIS, reality capture and building survey capabilities
- Maintain and improve geomatics workflows, standards and systems; report to Principal Geomatics Manager
- Investigate emerging technologies and identify opportunities for innovation, automation and improved efficiency
- Provide mentoring and technical guidance to Geomatics Officers and Assistant Geomatics Officers
- Manage workload and coordinate geomatics resources as required
- Carry out other duties commensurate with responsibilities

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join our Geomatics Department as a Senior Geomatics Officer.
There are two posts available which can be based at any of our four offices Andover, Cirencester, Milton Keynes or Suffolk.
The Senior Geomatics Officer is a senior technical specialist responsible for leading large, complex, and strategically significant geomatics projects across the organisation. The role provides technical leadership in archaeological survey, GIS, spatial data management, reality capture, and digital workflows, while supporting the continued development of geomatics services and standards.
The successful candidates will provide technical advice across the organisation, lead quality assurance of geomatics outputs, support innovation and best practice, and mentor Geomatics Officers and Assistant Geomatics Officers. They will work closely with project managers, fieldwork teams, and support staff to ensure the successful delivery of geomatics projects and services.
The Senior Geomatics Officer is a senior technical specialist responsible for supporting the Principal Geomatics Manager in the strategic development of geomatics services across Cotswold Archaeology. The post holder will take responsibility for large, complex and strategically significant geomatics projects and provide technical leadership in archaeological survey, GIS, reality capture, spatial data management and digital workflows.
The role will contribute to research and development initiatives, support innovation and continuous improvement, advise on geomatics equipment and software requirements, and help ensure the quality and consistency of geomatics outputs across all offices. The Senior Geomatics Officer will provide mentoring and technical guidance to colleagues and contribute to the continued development of standards, systems and working practices across the Geomatics Team

- To contribute to the development of Cotswold Archaeology's GIS, CAD, spatial analysis, mobile GIS, reality capture and building survey capabilities.
- To maintain, review and improve geomatics workflows, procedures, standards and systems, reporting recommendations to the Principal Geomatics Manager.
- To investigate emerging technologies and identify opportunities for innovation, automation and improved efficiency within geomatics workflows.
- To provide mentoring, technical guidance and support to Geomatics Officers and Assistant Geomatics Officers.
- To manage own workload and contribute to the effective allocation and coordination of geomatics resources where required.

Essential:
- Degree, postgraduate qualification or more than 5 years' experience in Archaeology, Geomatics, Surveying, Geography, Geospatial Science or a related discipline
- Significant experience of archaeological field survey and the handling, management and interpretation of spatial data

- Experience managing survey data for post-excavation assessment, analysis and publication
- Experience processing and managing photogrammetry and LiDAR datasets
Desirable:
- Experience of archaeological building survey and earthwork survey
- Experience with terrestrial laser scanning and point cloud processing
- Experience of UAV-derived survey and reality capture workflows
- Experience of remote data capture technologies, including terrestrial and airborne solutions
- Experience of magnetometry, resistivity and ground penetrating geophysics
- Experience of database design and spatial data management
- Experience with Python, SQL, Arcade, JavaScript, ModelBuilder or other automation tools
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Enterprise
- Familiarity with FME workflows
- Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and other Adobe Creative Cloud applications
- Experience of negotiating with suppliers and evaluating equipment procurement options
- Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) or other relevant professional body
