Job summary

Substack USA is seeking a senior software engineer to own the full lifecycle of product development from discovery through production delivery. You will design and ship features for creators, spanning frontend, backend, and occasional mobile work to serve a global audience.

In a small, autonomous, generalist team, you’ll collaborate with designers, writers, support staff, and researchers to deliver robust, scalable, and delightful experiences.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience.
• Independent and autonomous; able to own work and lead.
• Hold self and others to high standards on production systems.
• Pride in building elegant and delightful product experiences.
• Collaborate with diverse thinkers while contributing unique experience.
• Believe in Substack's mission to build a better business model for writing.
• Experience with TypeScript, Node/Express, React, Postgres.
• Experience with ML technology is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Architect and implement frontend and backend components, plus occasional mobile touchpoints.
• Partner with designers, writers, support staff, and researchers from concept through delivery.
• Operate with high autonomy in a small, generalist team.
• Translate complex product requirements into scalable, maintainable codebases.
• Write tests, perform code reviews, and refine production systems for reliability and security.
• Collaborate across disciplines to shape product outcomes.
• Investigate and integrate ML technologies to enhance the platform.
• Maintain understanding of user workflows to drive improvements.
