Job summary

Halliwell is expanding its Engineering Services team and seeks Senior Forensic Structural Engineers (Professional Engineers) to join across multiple U.S. locations, including Chicago and others.

You will perform forensic investigations, structural evaluations, and failure analyses for commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings, with a Chicago focus on building envelope and roofing systems. Candidates should hold or be eligible for a Professional Engineer license in the relevant state,

About the Role

Halliwell is expanding its Engineering Services team and is seeking experienced Senior Forensic Structural Engineers (Professional Engineers) to join us across multiple U.S. locations.

As a Senior Forensic Structural Engineer, you will perform forensic investigations, structural evaluations, and failure analyses of commercial, institutional, and industrial structures throughout your region. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers and construction consultants, you will investigate structural failures, determine root causes, and provide expert recommendations that help clients resolve complex engineering challenges.

The Chicago opportunity includes a specialized focus on building envelope and roofing systems, while the remaining locations focus on structural investigations across a broad range of building types.

Candidates should hold (or be eligible to obtain) the Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required for the state where they will be based.

Key Responsibilities
Forensic Engineering
  • Assess and evaluate the condition and potential causes of distress to a wide range of structural buildings and facilities.
  • Perform on-site field investigations and structural evaluations.
  • Conduct analyses of structural components and building systems.
  • Prepare clear, detailed forensic engineering reports, including findings, conclusions, and conceptual repair recommendations.
  • Work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and construction consultants on forensic investigations.
  • Receive mentorship from senior engineering professionals while supporting and mentoring junior team members.
Client Relationships & Business Development
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through successful project delivery.
  • Support regional business development and contribute to the continued growth of Halliwell's Engineering Services practice.
Qualifications
Required
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), or ability to obtain licensure in the applicable state.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in structural analysis, evaluation, and design of:
  • commercial, institutional, and industrial structures; and/or
  • building envelope systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Architecture.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Architecture.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience using structural analysis software.
  • Experience with CADD software and/or drafting software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
State Licensure Requirements
  • Chicago, Illinois – Illinois Professional Engineer (P.E.) (building envelope and roofing specialization)
  • Kansas City, Missouri/Kansas – Missouri and Kansas Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota – Minnesota Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • New York, New York – New York Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Pennsylvania Professional Engineer (P.E.)
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to perform field investigations, including climbing ladders, carrying inspection equipment, stooping, kneeling, and working in varying site conditions.
  • Approximately 15% regional travel.
