Job summary

Why does the job exist?

Position will perform and operate diagnostics, conduct maintenance, mechanical and electrical repairs on light duty automotive gasoline and heavy duty diesel equipment. Position will be a traveling mechanic.

How does it get done?

Position will prepare purchase requisitions for parts and supplies and prepare labor and parts estimates on repairs for management approval. Position will also provide support in completing and processing work orders in the NMDOT Fleet Management system to track labor and parts.

Who are the customers?

This position will help support internal New Mexico Department of Transportation employees.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate will have experience in.

  • Experience with equipment parts and repair manuals
  • Experience repairing or replacing parts, electrical, hydraulic, body frame or other systems
  • Experience working on and overhauling diesel and/or gasoline engines
  • Experience repairing heavy equipment
  • Experience performing mechanical work on trucks, and diesel powered equipment

One (1) year of work experience in a repair shop or maintenance facility. Educational experience in automotive service repair may substitute for required experience. Must possess or obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License, Class A (or equivalent license from another state) within one (1) year of hire.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must have or obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Exposure to noise, fumes, low and high liquid/air pressures, sparks, flames from welding and cutting torches, moving traffic and heavy equipment. Duties may include walking on hard/smooth surfaces/uneven ground. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to 90 pounds. Exposure to inclement weather: rain, snow and blowing winds. Ability to use hand tools (manual and powered) such as: band saws, hydraulic presses, tire mounting machines and heavy equipment. Work may also be performed in an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers. Occasional district wide and statewide travel with possible overnight stays is required. Possible geographic location change. Subject to call-out on short notice for emergencies, irregular hours-day or night to include night time work and snow removal as applicable are required.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
