Job summary

New Mexico Department of Transportation seeks a Senior Engineering Technician/Office Manager to manage project data, support the Project Manager and field technicians, and ensure accurate documentation. Why does the job exist?

The Senior Engineering Technician in this role is an Office Manager and will perform administrative and office management functions. This position manages construction project information, data, and provides support and assistance to the Project Manager and field technicians.

How does it get done?

The Senior Engineering Technician is responsible for entering updated data for project files and manuals. Incumbent prepares cost estimates, change orders, and maintains accurate and complete project related documentation. Additionally, this role collaborates and communicates with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Business Plan department and with the project crew. Monitors and reviews engineer technicians' documentation of activities and communicates the information to the Project Manager and crew members with up-to-date information. Keeps the department abreast of any changes to the administrative directives and updates regarding the policies and procedures. Also maintains assigned department equipment.

The customers are Contractors, Sub-Contractors, Engineer Technicians, Audit Groups, and the Project Manager.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, SHARE Financial System, Business to Government Now web portal, Labor Compliance Software tracker web portal, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Site Manager software.
  • Communication skills via written correspondence, in person, and telephone.
  • Office Manager or audit experience in materials testing.
  • Construction inspection, highway construction, highway maintenance, surveying, draft, and highway design experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend plans, contracts, and equipment usage.

High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments, interaction with the public.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
