The Space Division – Space Sensing & Security Branch at Leidos, within the space-based product line, is seeking a talented Senior Firmware/FPGA Software Engineer to join a diverse team in San Diego, CA, to develop solutions for complex problems.

Job Overview

This role is part of the Leidos Space Division – Space Sensing & Security engineering team. As a Senior Firmware/FPGA Design Engineer, you will be integral in designing FPGA-based solutions for space-based products. This position offers the chance to impact current and future space sensor projects using your FPGA expertise, designing innovative FPGA solutions across various hardware platforms and FPGAs. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design, develop, simulate, and integrate FPGA designs and sensor systems.

We aim to advance your FPGA techniques and develop cutting-edge FPGA technologies. You will also work with customer specifications, leveraging your background in FPGA algorithms and MATLAB support for a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. Responsibilities include supporting integration, testing, and verification of final products.

Primary Responsibilities

The main functions include designing, implementing, and testing firmware solutions for high-speed FPGAs and supporting circuitry. Additional tasks involve:

• Collaborating with engineers and scientists to implement FPGA designs and sensor systems.
• Analyzing, designing, simulating, and implementing algorithms in hardware description languages (VHDL, Verilog) based on MATLAB models.
• Creating HDL test benches for code validation against models.
• Reviewing schematic diagrams of FPGA-centric hardware involving high-speed digital and analog circuitry.
• Testing FPGA and SoC evaluation boards, evaluating results, and developing specifications for system components.
• Addressing diverse technical problems, selecting methods, and providing feedback to team members.
• Developing test plans, procedures, and supporting lab and field testing.
• Maintaining requirements, specifications, and interface documents.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates should possess FPGA fundamentals, including:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 8-12 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with FPGA system design and testing.
• Embedded software/firmware development experience.
• Proficiency in C/C++, MATLAB.
• Knowledge of high-speed serial communication standards (e.g., Aurora, 10Ge, PCIe, DDR, JESD204B).
• Experience with version control systems (SVN, Git).
• Hands-on experience with instrumentation and testing methods.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Final DoD Secret Clearance.

Qualifications

Preferred qualities include:

• Familiarity with Xilinx FPGA families (7-series, Ultrascale+), Vivado, and Xilinx IP cores.
• Experience with Zynq and Zynq Ultrascale+ SoC designs, peripherals, and bus architectures.
• Development of FPGA-optimized DSP algorithms (modulation/demodulation, PLLs, filters, image processing).
• Experience with AXI interfaces and embedded RTOS (e.g., Green Hills).
• Masters degree in Engineering.
