The Space Division – Space Sensing & Security Branch at Leidos, within the space-based product line, is actively seeking a talented Senior Firmware/FPGA Software Engineer to join a diverse team in San Diego, CA, to create unique solutions for complex problems.

Job Overview

This position is part of the Leidos Space Division – Space Sensing & Security engineering development team. As a Senior Firmware/FPGA Design Engineer, you will be an integral part of a team designing FPGA-based solutions for space-based products. This role offers a unique opportunity to impact Leidos’ space-based sensor projects using your FPGA expertise, designing solutions for various hardware platforms, boards, and FPGAs. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team (electrical engineers, systems engineers, scientists) to design, develop, simulate, and integrate FPGA designs and sensor systems.

We aim to advance your FPGA techniques to develop advanced FPGA technologies and techniques. You will also have the opportunity to design, develop, and decompose customer specifications, supporting FPGA algorithms implementation in MATLAB and hardware. The role includes supporting integration, testing, and verification of final products.

Primary Responsibilities

The FPGA/Firmware Design Engineer’s main functions include designing, implementing, and testing firmware solutions for high-speed FPGAs and supporting circuitry. Additional skills include:

• Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to implement and integrate FPGA and sensor system designs.
• Analyzing, designing, simulating, and implementing algorithms in HDL (VHDL, Verilog) based on MATLAB models.
• Creating HDL test benches for code validation against models.
• Analyzing schematic diagrams of FPGA-centric systems involving digital and analog circuitry.
• Conducting tests on FPGA and SoC evaluation boards, evaluating results, and developing specifications for component selection.
• Addressing diverse technical problems, determining methods, and providing feedback to team members.
• Developing and executing project test plans and procedures, supporting lab and field testing.
• Maintaining requirements, functional specifications, and interface control documents.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates should possess FPGA foundations such as:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 8-12 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with FPGA system design and testing.
• Embedded Software/Firmware design experience.
• Proficiency in C/C++, MATLAB.
• Understanding of high-speed serial communication standards (e.g., Aurora, 10Ge, PCIe, DDR4/3/2/1, JESD204B).
• Experience with version control systems like SVN and Git.
• Hands-on experience with test equipment and debugging methods.
• Must be a US citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Final DoD Secret Clearance.

Qualifications

Preferred qualities include:

• Familiarity with Xilinx FPGA families (7-series, Ultrascale+), Vivado, Xilinx IP cores.
• Experience with SoC designs such as Zynq and Zynq Ultrascale+ including peripheral interfacing.
• Developing FPGA-optimized DSP algorithms (modulation/demodulation, PLLs, filters, image processing).
• Experience with interfaces like AXI4, AXI4-Stream, AXI4-Lite.
• Experience with embedded OSs such as RTOS (e.g., Green Hills).
• Master’s degree in Engineering.

Pay Range: $104,650.00 - $189,175.00
