Senior Firmware Engineer Role

The Senior Firmware Engineer will play a critical role in modernizing and rearchitecting an existing embedded firmware platform supporting connected water management products. This is a newly created position focused on improving firmware architecture, scalability, reliability, and maintainability. The ideal candidate will bring strong embedded software development experience, a deep understanding of hardware integration, and the ability to leverage modern development tools, including artificial intelligence, to improve firmware development.

Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to the modernization and rearchitecture of an existing embedded firmware platform.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware using C and/or C++.
• Improve firmware modularity, scalability, maintainability, and separation of concerns.
• Develop and enhance hardware abstraction layers to support multiple hardware configurations.
• Design, implement, and improve reliable over the air (OTA) firmware update capabilities.
• Develop firmware for resource constrained embedded systems and microcontrollers.
• Work with real time operating systems such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
• Support wireless connectivity technologies including WiFi, Bluetooth Low Energy, and cellular communication.
• Develop and troubleshoot embedded communication interfaces including I2C, SPI, and UART.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate firmware with electronic components and systems.
• Read electrical schematics, interpret component datasheets, and troubleshoot hardware and firmware interactions.
• Perform hands on debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related testing equipment.
• Utilize AI assisted development tools in the context of writing, reviewing, and improving firmware code.
• Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and engineering planning.
• Collaborate with software, hardware, product, and quality teams to deliver reliable embedded solutions.
• Contribute to engineering standards, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline preferred.
• 5+ years of software development experience.
• 3+ years of hands on embedded firmware development experience.
• Strong programming experience with C and/or C++.
• Experience developing production firmware for resource constrained embedded devices.
• Experience with ARM Cortex M or comparable microcontrollers.
• Knowledge of real time operating systems, preferably FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
• Experience with embedded communication protocols including I2C, SPI, and UART.
• Experience integrating firmware with hardware components and electronic systems.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and component datasheets.
• Hands on debugging experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or comparable equipment.
• Experience with wireless connectivity technologies.
• Understanding of OTA firmware update mechanisms.
• Experience using AI tools specifically to assist with firmware code development.
• Experience improving or rearchitecting existing firmware platforms strongly preferred.
