Job summary

Cumberland County Emergency Services seeks a strategic Fire Marshal to lead the Fire Marshal’s Division, directing fire prevention, code enforcement, investigations, and community risk reduction for the county. This senior role represents the County during major incidents and coordinates with law enforcement, state agencies, and partners to strengthen public safety.

Qualifications

• Two-year college/technical degree in Fire Science or Emergency Services with 3 years of related experience.
• NC Fire Inspector Level III preferred; strong knowledge of fire codes and safety standards.
• Ability to supervise, coordinate investigations, and communicate with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Direct and oversee fire code enforcement, inspections, and life-safety programs.
• Interpret fire codes; determine violations; enforce corrective actions and inspections.
• Develop departmental goals, policies, budgets, and support RMS records management.
• Supervise Deputy Fire Marshals; manage onboarding, evaluations, and discipline.
• Coordinate with local fire chiefs and state/federal partners on prevention initiatives.
• Develop fire prevention education and community risk reduction programs.
• Support EOC activations; provide ICS leadership and resource coordination.
• Participate in fire cause-and-origin investigations and testify as needed.
• Collaborate with SBI/ATF on investigations and trend analysis.
• Prepare reports; monitor legislation and maintain communications with partners.
