Job summary

OhioHealth is seeking a Patient Financial Counselor in a clinic setting to assist patients and families with face-to-face inquiries on account balances, financial assistance programs, Medicaid eligibility, and payment arrangements.

You will work with billing, registration and scheduling systems, ensure charity policy compliance, and support department leadership while delivering compassionate customer service. This is a day shift, 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED required.
  • Typing speed 30 wpm essential.
  • Proficiency with multiple data systems including billing and scheduling.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance, hospital charges and patient accounting.
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Good interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • 2–3 years of related hospital or ambulatory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Handle face-to-face customer inquiries about accounts and payments.
  • Collaborate with Financial Counselors and other teams to resolve issues.
  • Offer charity options and verify Medicaid eligibility.
  • Maintain patient privacy and data accuracy.
  • Support coverage and training tasks as needed.
  • Quality review work from outside eligibility vendors.

Job Description Summary:

Responsible for assisting the with customer issues involving face-to-face interaction with patients and/or their families regarding point-of-service collections, financial assistance programs, Medicaid eligibility and qualifications. This position is in a clinic setting and the lead for all face-to-face patient direct inquiries/concerns regarding account balances, financial assistance, insurance information, payment arrangements and any other non-clinical related questions.

Responsibilities And Duties:
  • 40% Receive customer issues and escalation from Financial Counselors, OhioHealth Customer Service , Administration, Risk Management, Revenue Cycle Management, Legal Offices, and any other designated area within OhioHealth and resolves in a timely manner. Performs all research and follow up with the requesting party. Contact s the customer when needed by telephone or letter. Ensure OhioHealth's charity policy and procedures are followed and appropriately offered to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Maintain the integrity of all patients requesting assistance.
  • 20% Perform follow up and training on identified issues/concerns with department associates.
  • 10% Support department supervisors providing coverage, as needed, at any/all central Ohio facilities and regional facilities.
  • 10% Works directly with outside eligibility vendor and is responsible to quality review their work.
  • 5% Visit face to face with patients for collection opportunities of Medicare deductible and inpatient commercial copays, which directly affects the overall financial results of OhioHealth.
  • 5% Work department reports as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School or GED (Required)
  • Typing skills of 3 0 wpm essential.
  • Demonstrated PC software application knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to access and use multiple data systems including billing, registration and scheduling system.
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance; hospital charges; patient accounting principles and financial evaluation techniques.
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication and organization skills.
  • Minimum two to three years directly related Experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting.
