Job summary

Columbia Housing is seeking a Controller in Columbia, SC, to provide strategic financial leadership and ensure accurate accounting, reporting, and budgeting. The role reports to the COO/CFO and drives fiscal accountability across all finance operations.

The Controller will oversee GAAP compliance, HUD reporting, and audits, guiding staff and aligning financial strategy with agency goals. A CPA is preferred and a strong background in public sector finance is beneficial.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required.
• Minimum of six years of experience in public sector accounting, budgeting, and financial management, with at least three years in a managerial or supervisory role.
• CPA certification is preferred where applicable.

Responsibilities

• Direct and manage day-to-day operations of the Finance Department.
• Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, payroll review, grants accounting and financial reporting.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports for leadership and Board meetings.
• Ensure GAAP compliance and HUD/regulatory requirements are met.
• Coordinate audits and maintain strong internal controls.
• Provide leadership and development for Finance staff.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

Minimum six years of experience in public sector accounting, budgeting, and financial management, including minimum three years of managerial or supervisory experience
