Job summary

American Water in Sacramento is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to support financial planning, forecasting, and reporting for designated state operations. You will analyze performance, develop budgets, and work with partners across the organization to drive value.

The role requires solid accounting/finance background, strong Excel and modeling skills, and 5 years of related experience, with preference for regulated utility exposure. Hybrid schedule: three days in office, two remote.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business or a closely related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (CPA, CMA, CFA) preferred.
  • 5 years of accounting/financial experience; regulated utility experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support financial planning, forecasting, reporting, ratio analysis, and modeling for state(s) and/or line of business.
  • Collaborate with business partners to develop budgets and reforecasting assumptions.
  • Assist with regulatory filings, data requests, SOX controls, and ad hoc analyses.
  • Provide analytical support to management and generate monthly/quarterly/annual results.

Primary Role

Position supports the financial function for a state(s) and/or line of business. Responsible for supporting the business planning and reforecasting process, financial reporting and analysis, ratio analysis and operational metric interpretation, evaluation and modeling of new business opportunities, and collaboration with operational business partners on an ongoing basis. Functions as the liaison with state(s) and/or line of business leaders on financial matters.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead collaboration with the business to understand key business drivers & operational metrics and deliver effective analysis of results on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Provide analytical support to all levels of management, including ad-hoc reporting for the state(s) and/or line of business and corporate partners.
  • Participate in budgeting & reforecasting processes. Collaborate with operational and financial business partners to develop budget assumptions and pertinent supporting schedules.
  • Support regulatory filings and data requests with financial data and analysis.
  • Support Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance controls assigned to the team.
  • Other special projects and ad hoc assignments.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Strong relationship-builder amongst diverse business groups and individuals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong financial analysis and modeling skills.
  • Ability to recommend and implement process improvements, work independently, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships within finance and with all levels of management.
  • Understands the mission, vision, values, and strategies of AW.
  • Knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (USGAAP).
  • Advanced MS Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • SAP and Hyperion experience preferred.
Experience/Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced degree or CPA, CMA or CFA preferred.
  • 5 years of accounting/financial related experience required. Regulated utility experience preferred.
Travel Requirements
  • As necessary, up to 10%.
