Job summary

City of Madison, Alabama is seeking a Building Inspector to perform field inspections of residential and commercial structures and approve occupancy based on code standards. You will review plans, explain code requirements to contractors, and record results in the permitting software.

The role combines office work with site visits and may involve training others. Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent with 3 years related inspector experience, or licensure as Alabama General

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years related experience, at least one as a certified Building Inspector.
• Licensure as Alabama General Contractor or Homebuilder with at least 3 years related experience, at least one as a certified Building Inspector.
• Five years of experience as certified building inspector.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience and ability to acquire at least one certification within ten months.

Responsibilities

• Performs field inspections of residential and commercial structures including framing, plumbing, gas, electrical and mechanical installations.
• Approves occupancy for new structures based on minimum adopted code requirements.
• Review plans for code compliance and approve permits.
• Interfaces with Engineering, utilities and other departments until occupancy is issued.
• May train other inspectors and employees.
• Maintains knowledge of current minimum code standards for residential and commercial construction.
• Inputs inspection results into an automated permitting software program.
• Places stop work orders on jobs without proper permits.
