Job summary

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University seeks a Senior, Part-Time Fiber-Optic Applications R&D Engineer to advance optical systems and manufacturing tech for DoD applications. Hybrid work is available with on-site Freeport, PA duties.

ARL partners with DoD SkillBridge and welcomes transitioning military members. Responsibilities include leading fiber-optic projects, developing prototypes, and coordinating with government customers to identify funded opportunities.

Qualifications

• Experience managing fiber-optic or photonics projects, including DoD-related work.
• Broad understanding of photonic and fiber design options for DoD systems.
• Strong skills in prototyping, testing, and packaging of photonics components and systems.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities.
• Track record of transitioning technology from lab to implementation.

Responsibilities

• Perform research and development tasks in fiber-optic applications, including system analysis and prototype development/testing.
• Communicate and document results in reports and presentations.
• Assist with development of proposals for projects.
• Assist in new concept development; apply engineering techniques to assignments.
• Lead fiber-optic projects of small/moderate size and scope.
• Engage with government customers to identify opportunities and provide solutions.
