Job summary
Sumitomo Biorational Company is seeking a skilled Fermentation Scientist to lead upstream process development at our Libertyville R&D center. You will conduct fermentation experiments in laboratory- and pilot-scale bioreactors, evaluating microbial strain performance and collaborating with fermentation scientists, engineers, and chemists to deliver sustainable biorational solutions.
The role requires mentoring junior staff, designing scale-up/down studies, and ensuring safe, compliant operations
Qualifications
- Experience in fermentation process development and scaling from lab to pilot scale.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement upstream processes to optimize strain performance in bacterial and fungal systems.
- Mentor junior team members in fermentation and analytical equipment use.
- Lead operation and troubleshooting of pilot-scale fermentation equipment.
- Plan scale-up/down studies for technology transfer between R&D and Manufacturing.
- Collaborate with data scientists, IT, and engineering to organize run data and electronic batch records.
- Ensure compliance with safety, containment, SOPs and clean workspace.
