Job summary

Sumitomo Biorational Company, located in Osage, IA, seeks a Pilot Plant Engineer Intern to learn and assist in monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing fermentation, recovery, and formulation processes. You will work with Research and Development Scientists and Production Engineers to evaluate feasibility and implement methods in production.

The role emphasizes safety, good laboratory practices, data analysis, and protocol writing.

Qualifications

Majoring in bioengineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, biology, chemical engineering or related fields is required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Able to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary, diverse team.
Excellent computer skills are desired.
Flexibility to work some limited off-shift and weekend hours to support all production shifts when needed.

Responsibilities

Support and comply with all safety and environmental training policies and programs.
Under the supervision of the Pilot Plant Team, set up and monitor pilot-scale fermenters and downstream process unit operation.
Analyze, summarize and present pilot data to Research and Production Teams.
Recommend and implement process improvement ideas to Production.
Heat and mass balance.
Mathematical modeling of metabolism and fermentation.
