Job summary

Duke University invites applications for a General Maintenance Mechanic (GMM) role within Facilities Management. You will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs across plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, painting, glazing, and general building maintenance to support a safe and efficient campus environment.

Working both independently and with skilled trades professionals, you will help preserve the functionality, safety, and appearance of Duke's facilities, while

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with relevant trades coursework or experience.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• Training in OSHA, fire safety, fall protection, lockout/tagout, blueprint reading.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on building systems and equipment.
• Troubleshoot and repair plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, painting, glazing, and building components.
• Complete assigned maintenance tasks while ensuring safety standards and departmental procedures.
• Assist higher-level mechanics and trades personnel with maintenance and repair projects.
• Maintain and repair plumbing fixtures and components across facilities.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical devices including switches, lighting, and wiring.
• Repair doors, windows, trim, and related hardware.
• Apply mortar, sealants, and coatings for finishes and repairs.
• Complete preventive maintenance inspections and related documentation.
• Accurately complete work orders, inventory records, and inspection forms.
• Perform basic calculations, measurements, and conversions; maintain clean, organized work areas.
