Job summary

UT-Battelle at ORNL seeks a Senior Research Scientist to push AI for science on leadership-class supercomputers. You will design, train, and evaluate AI systems that plan, reason, and act to accelerate discovery across materials, chemistry, climate, and biology.

The role emphasizes cross‑cutting HPC‑AI leadership, collaboration with national labs and industry, and a track record of high-impact research and publications.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a field closely related to the job duties of this position.
• A minimum of 6 years of relevant research experience outside of Ph.D.
• Demonstrated research in cross-cutting fields of HPC and/or AI.

Responsibilities

• Develop and coordinate division activities in HPC-AI with cross-cutting initiatives.
• Lead and collaborate with internal and external researchers on AI/ML projects.
• Author peer‑reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals; advance staff contributions.
• Lead in building teams, mentorship, and stakeholder engagement with sponsors and collaborators.
• Mentor postdocs, students, and junior staff to foster career development.
