Senior E&S Casualty Underwriter – West Coast
We are seeking a Senior E&S Casualty Underwriter with a strong production mindset and established wholesale broker relationships to help expand our presence across the West and Southwest markets. This individual will play a key role in building a profitable book of Excess & Surplus casualty business through strategic broker partnerships, disciplined underwriting, and a solutions-oriented approach to complex risks.
The ideal candidate is an experienced underwriter who is comfortable operating in a dynamic E&S environment, has a demonstrated ability to generate new business, and understands how to balance growth objectives with sound underwriting judgment.
Develop and expand a profitable E&S Casualty book of business throughout the West and Southwest.
Establish, strengthen, and maintain productive relationships with wholesale brokers and key distribution partners.
Drive new business production through proactive marketing, broker engagement, and consistent follow-up.
Underwrite new and renewal business in accordance with company appetite, authority, and underwriting guidelines.
Evaluate complex casualty exposures and determine appropriate terms, conditions, pricing, limits, deductibles, and attachment points.
Target opportunities within key industry segments, including:
Premises Liability
Hospitality
Product Manufacturing
Excess Auto
Consider both supported and unsupported business, depending on the overall quality, structure, and characteristics of the account.
Maintain a minimum target premium of $25,000 per account.
Partner with brokers to structure creative and competitive solutions for challenging or hard-to-place risks.
Monitor portfolio performance, exposure, and profitability while maintaining disciplined underwriting standards.
Stay current on emerging casualty trends, market conditions, loss developments, and evolving exposures within the E&S marketplace.
Represent the organization professionally in broker meetings, industry events, and other business-development activities.
7+ years of commercial casualty underwriting experience, preferably within the E&S marketplace.
Demonstrated success in new business production and portfolio growth.
Established relationships with wholesale brokers across the West and/or Southwest.
Strong knowledge of casualty exposures, particularly premises, hospitality, manufacturing/product liability, and excess auto.
Proven ability to assess complex risks and exercise sound underwriting judgment.
Comfortable underwriting both supported and unsupported opportunities within established authority.
Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-management skills.
Entrepreneurial, collaborative, and highly accountable approach to business development.
Ability to balance production goals with underwriting discipline and profitability.
Success in this role will be measured by the ability to expand the West/Southwest footprint, deepen wholesale broker relationships, generate quality new business, and build a sustainable and profitable E&S Casualty portfolio. The successful candidate will bring both the market relationships and underwriting expertise necessary to identify opportunities and turn them into long-term trading partnerships.
