Job summary

Staunton City & Schools Public Works is seeking an Equipment Maintenance Technician (Mechanic)-III to join the Equipment Maintenance Division in Staunton, VA. The role focuses on high‑level mechanical work, diagnostics, and repairs across light and heavy vehicles and power equipment.

You will perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and complex repairs, with responsibilities including logs of work orders and potential snow removal duties as needed. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 5 years hands-on automotive experience or graduation from a technical institute.
• Must hold Virginia Class B CDL with N, P, S, and Air Brake endorsements; eligible for Class A within 6 months.
• Valid Virginia emissions inspector/mechanic license and Automotive Air Conditioning Certification.

Responsibilities

• Perform advanced diagnostics and repair using testing equipment and scan tools.
• Repair and overhaul brakes, transmissions, ignition systems, differentials, and axles; tire changes.
• Electrical work, welding, and fabrication on equipment.
• Service air compressors, pumps, leaf vacuums, wood chippers, and snow removal gear.
• Conduct official state vehicle inspections following OSHA safety guidelines.
• Log work orders and assist with seasonal snow removal operations.
