Job description

Senior Equipment Engineer

(Direct Placement for Client)

Sigma Design has collaborated with a global company seeking an experienced Senior Equipment Engineer to join their facility in Gresham, OR. This company is a leader in the design, development and production of synthetic diamond and tungsten carbide super materials.

What Is Offered:
  • Choice of excellent health plans
  • Dental and vision plans
  • 401k plan and safe harbor with company match up to 6%
  • Generous vacation (4 weeks of PTO + 1 week of Sick Time)
  • Salary:$100-$110k
  • This position is full time in office
Primary Function:

The Senior Equipment Engineer owns the reliability, availability, and performance of site equipment. This person takes complex equipment problems from first investigation through to implementation and a verified fix, with minimal direction, and stays accountable for the outcome. The role also shapes the site’s reliability and maintenance approach, including predictive and condition-based maintenance, and mentors the wider engineering team. You’ll work closely with Maintenance, Operations, and external partners, and contribute to capital projects and continuous improvement.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
  • Take ownership of complex equipment problems from initial investigation through to implementation and verified resolution. Define the problem, build a plan, assess risks, and drive actions to completion.
  • Coordinate internal specialists and external suppliers (maintenance, design, OEMs). You don’t need every technical answer yourself, but you do need to find and engage the right expertise and own the result.
  • Develop and maintain the site’s reliability and maintenance approach, including predictive and condition-based maintenance.
  • Champion the CMMS and lead FMEAs, MTAs or RCM as part of the reliability program. Develop and maintain a 12-week maintenance plan that lines up with equipment availability.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for process run failures. Host regular risk and mitigation reviews so lessons learned reach all stakeholders and actions are closed out on time.
  • Review equipment breakdown escalations from Maintenance in a timely way, and work with production technicians, maintenance technicians and engineering to improve maintenance strategies.
  • Develop an in-depth technical understanding of CVD diamond-synthesis reactors, the process levers that affect yield quality, and the equipment before and after synthesis.
  • Use data analysis tools to evaluate and improve equipment efficiency. Host regular metric reviews to spot problem areas and performance trends.
  • Draft and lead hazard and risk assessments for your assigned equipment, and contribute to a Zero Harm safety culture.
  • Manage equipment projects, including commissioning of new equipment: document control, weekly meetings, quality control, budget analysis and risk management. Prepare detailed start-up plans that bring all disciplines together.
  • Help develop and implement factory and site acceptance procedures.
  • Develop new and standardize existing engineering and maintenance procedures, document best practices, and keep SOPs reviewed and up to date.
  • Outline and specify critical spare parts and calibration equipment for commissioning and ongoing maintenance.
  • Support the Design Requirements Process as a subject matter expert.
  • Mentor and guide the wider Equipment Engineering team, and develop training programs for onboarding new staff.
  • Become the in-house expert on the production equipment and support Maintenance Technicians.
Required skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated examples of owning complex technical problems and delivering them through to verified resolution
  • Experience in a similar engineering role (preferred), ideally on CVD or similar equipment
  • Experience managing both internal and external resources, such as maintenance, design and OEMs
  • Experience with new projects, start-ups, or process transfer is a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving environment. Comfortable leading change.
  • Ability to typically spend 5 days per week on site.
  • Ability to travel internationally and work across time zones.
  • Makes clear, timely decisions and gives explicit guidance. Decisions are focused on increasing or improving the company’s options and are owned.
  • Comfortable working to develop the behavior and performance of the team.
    • Avoids complexity. Does not over-engineer solutions and stays focused on the problem being solved. Considers the implications of local decisions across the whole organization.
  • Looks beyond what is good for the business. Holds self and others to account. Understands that no one sees the complete picture and values perspectives from across the business.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable taking on responsibility. Demonstrable experience of mentoring and coaching.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, in writing and in person.
Work Environment

Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients, or suppliers.
