A Brief Overview

We are looking for a highly capable Senior Environmental Technical Claims Specialist to help us on a temporary assignment through 31 August 2025 and work from anywhere in the United States. If this assignment is filled in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Richmond (VA), or San Antonio, the assignment can be considered temp-to-hire. This individual will report to a manager in New York City and focus on adjudicating first and third-party commercial environmental claims (mostly complex storage tank claims), contributing to superb results for our clients. As this is a temporary assignment, only government-mandated benefits will be provided.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the role are:

  • Adjudicate commercial environmental claims at the highest authority limits on assignments reflecting the highest degree of technical complexity, potentially with major impact on departmental results.
  • Conduct detailed information gathering, analysis, and investigation to find solutions to numerous and undefined issues.
  • Report to senior management and underwriters on claims trends and developments.
  • Analyze claims forms, policies, endorsements, client instructions, and other records to determine policy coverage.
  • Investigate claims promptly and thoroughly, including interviewing involved parties.
  • Manage claims in litigation.
  • Manage diary and complete tasks timely to ensure cases move to the best financial outcome and resolution.
  • Set claim reserves properly, considering policy wording impacts.
  • Identify loss drivers and claims trends to reduce claims frequency and severity through data analysis and improved claim management.
  • Coordinate expertise resources to assist in case resolution.
  • Prepare reports for file documentation.
  • Apply creative solutions for the best financial outcome.
  • Negotiate effectively to provide cost-effective solutions within own limits using various negotiation styles.
  • Process mail and prioritize workload.
  • Complete telephone calls and written correspondence with various parties.
  • Maintain a passion for strong claim management.

Core qualifications and requirements:

  • Good business acumen understanding how insurance companies work and make money, and how this role impacts profitability.
  • Deep knowledge of commercial environmental claims acquired through:
    • A minimum of seven years’ experience adjudicating claims of $100,000 or more.
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required; J.D. preferred. Alternatively, two insurance designations or four additional years of related experience can substitute for a degree.
    • Licensed Claims Examiner (state-specific); ability to obtain licenses within 120 days if not already licensed.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong evaluation, strategic, and negotiation skills.
  • Customer-focused with effective time management.
  • Ability to articulate financial value to various responsibility levels, including CEO.
  • Discretion and independent judgment in significant matters.
  • Inner strength and integrity to do the right thing daily.
  • Results-oriented with a solution-focused mindset.
  • Global mindset and client-centric approach.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Proficient in MS Office and other business software.

The salary range varies by geographic location, with specifics provided for Colorado, California, New York City, and San Francisco metro areas.

This role generally operates within a standard office environment, requiring PC use and related equipment.
