This is a field-based position supporting underground construction as part of the project's design-build team. The successful candidate will perform rock face mapping and rock mass evaluation during tunnel, cavern, and excavation and provide technical input regarding ground conditions and temporary rock support. The project will involve both TBM and drill-and-blast excavation methods.

The initial assignment is expected to be long-term, with the overall project need anticipated to continue for approximately 2-3 years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform detailed geologic and rock face mapping following excavation cycles;
  • Evaluate rock mass conditions, characteristics, discontinuities, and overall stability;
  • Work closely with tunnel engineering personnel to assess rock quality and provide field observations related to temporary support requirements;
  • Provide technical input regarding shotcrete, rock bolts, and other rock reinforcement/support systems, including adjustments based on observed field conditions;
  • Perform inspection and evaluation of underground construction involving tunnels, caverns, shafts, and adits;
  • Observe and document rock reinforcement, rock mass grouting, probe hole drilling, permeability testing, and other geotechnical construction activities;
  • Support geotechnical instrumentation activities, including deformation and vibration monitoring;
  • Prepare detailed daily field reports, geologic maps, rock mapping records, boring/probe-hole logs, and other project documentation;
  • Review plans, specifications, drawings, construction procedures and other technical documents applicable to the work;
  • Coordinate with project engineers, contractors, construction personnel and client representatives regarding field conditions and construction activities;
  • Attend project and progress meetings as required; and
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of additional field personnel as needed to support the construction schedule.
  • The project specifically anticipates the geologist mapping the rock mass after excavation and supporting the tunnel engineer in assessing rock quality and temporary support, including shotcrete and rock bolt patterns.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid New York State Professional Geologist (P.G.) or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required;
  • Extensive professional experience in underground construction, including tunnels, caverns, shafts, and/or similar underground structures;
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience with rock face mapping and rock mass characterization/stability evaluation;
  • Experience with underground excavation support systems, including rock bolts, shotcrete, grouting, and related rock reinforcement methods;
  • Experience with mined and bored tunnel construction strongly preferred;
  • Familiarity with TBM and drill‑and‑blast tunneling methods preferred;
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, geologic information, and construction documents;
  • Strong technical writing and field documentation skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with contractors, engineers, clients, and other project stakeholders;
