Job summary

The City of West Hollywood is seeking a Senior Engineering Associate to oversee consultant and contractor contracts and coordinate with City departments and state agencies. This role requires strong civil/traffic engineering knowledge and project management capabilities.

You will perform advanced professional duties, prepare materials for the City Council, develop studies and budgets, and review plans for building permits, with emphasis on public works and infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Traffic/Transportation Engineering.
• 4–5 years of civil/traffic engineering experience; two years in construction project management.
• Experience with plan checks, permits, and applying codes and standards.

How We Serve

The Engineering Division provides essential services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives, works, and visits West Hollywood. We are responsible for the administration, planning, design, maintenance, and construction management of the City's critical infrastructure from streets and sewers to traffic signals and storm drains. The Division delivers comprehensive engineering services, including preliminary design, construction inspection, and project management for public works projects. We oversee street and sewer maintenance, coordinate with utility companies, and manage the Capital Improvement Program. Our team handles development review, sanitation systems, traffic engineering, roadway lighting, and drainage evaluation for all new and redeveloped properties.

What You'll Contribute

In this role, the Senior Engineering Associate oversees consultant and contractor contracts and collaborates with City departments, community stakeholders, businesses, and local, county, and state agencies. Responsibilities include performing advanced professional duties such as preparing and presenting materials to the City Council and commissions, as well as developing studies, analyses, reports, agenda items, budgets, workplans, designs, plans, and specifications.

The ideal candidate will:

• Have working knowledge of civil and/or traffic engineering principles, practices, and applicable public contract codes as they relate to capital improvement and development projects.
• Bring hands‑on experience with construction project management, including inspection, contract administration, and coordination with contractors and utility companies.
• Be comfortable conducting plan check reviews and issuing permits for building and construction permit applications, applying relevant codes and engineering standards.
• Demonstrate sound analytical skills in preparing infrastructure analysis reports, studies, and budget/cost estimates.
• Communicate effectively, in writing and verbally, with City staff, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, and members of the public.
• Work well both independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgment on assignments of moderate complexity.

Reports to: Principal Civil Engineer

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Civil Engineering, Traffic/Transportation Engineering, or related field; and,
• Four to five years of full-time progressively responsible professional-level experience in civil engineering or traffic engineering, including two years of experience in construction project management.
• Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, complex, analytical skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
