Job summary

A regional utilities provider in Florida is seeking a Senior Engineer - System Protection to manage design and settings for transmission and generation systems. The role involves project management, on-site work, and adherence to compliance standards. The ideal candidate should possess a BSc in Electrical Engineering and have significant experience in electric power utilities. Qualifications

  • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in electric power utility in the discipline of system protection, emphasis on design and settings.
  • Registered or eligible to become a Registered Professional Engineer in Florida.

Job description

Join to apply for the SENIOR ENGINEER - SYSTEM PROTECTION role at Seminole Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Performs transmission and generation design and settings, including managing diverse work assignments requiring highly developed professional judgment and knowledge of transmission and generation protection systems. As required, provides assistance to departments within Seminole associated with protection and control systems.

Essential Functions

  • Designs complex transmission and generation protection schemes to insure BES integrity
  • Performs project management on system protection projects
  • Works on green-field and brown-field (retrofit) Protection and Control Projects
  • Prepares, reviews and verifies system protection design and settings, transmission protection schematics and relay elementary diagrams, and relay test plans for new transmission protection systems
  • Serves as subject matter expert for assigned NERC standards
  • Reviews and approves staff and consultant designs and calculations for Seminole protection schemes to assure proper system operation
  • Reviews inventory for relay protection components for facility ratings purposes
  • Analyzes all system disturbances for Seminole and all member delivery points to ascertain cause/effect and remedial action if necessary
  • Develops system protection portion of substation operating instructions and assists System Operations with the development of restoration procedures for unscheduled outages
  • Represents Seminole on applicable SERC and FRCC technical committees relating to protection and control
  • Keeps abreast of new technologies and advancements, as well as participates at some level with outside organizations such as IEEE or NERC standard drafting teams
  • Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned
  • NERC Compliance: Performs NERC Compliance Program roles if/as designated in Seminole's Standard Ownership Matrix (SOM) including ongoing evidence retention in "audit-ready" form. You should also be familiar with Seminole's Enterprise Internal Compliance Program (ENT-GCD-RGC-EP-054) to further your understanding of Seminole's compliance program and your duties and responsibilities in the SOM.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Advanced degree in engineering preferred. Registered or eligible to become a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida. Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in electric power utility in the discipline of system protection, emphasis on design and settings. Professional registration as an engineer in Florida or an advanced degree in engineering may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE). Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Working Conditions

Some travel, overnight stays, and work outside of normal business hours to existing and future transmission facilities, substation and generator sites as required. While working in certain areas of substations and/or switchyards, there is the potential for exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment.
