Job summary

S seminole Electric Cooperative, Inc. is seeking an experienced engineer to provide technical direction for electrical and instrumentation systems. You'll manage engineering activities and oversee project development to ensure reliability, efficiency, and safety in operations.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, with at least 8 years of relevant experience in large power plants. Proficiency in design, construction, and operations is essential. A Professional Engineer (PE) registration is preferred.

Job description

Provides complex electrical and instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering services to assist in attaining the goals of plant reliability, efficiency, safety and environmental compliance in the most cost-effective manner. Manages and coordinates engineering activities in support of the operations and maintenance of the power plant to improve reliability, operability and maintainability. Plans, develops, designs, and executes capital and major expense projects. This involves but is not limited to exploration of project needs, definition of scope, engineering oversight and consultation across cross-functional teams to deliver results within budget and on schedule. Provides technical directions and reviews engineering and design drawings, technical calculations, and other deliverables of peers and vendors to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, policies and guidelines. Champions any necessary changes to department or corporate processes and procedures to drive continuous improvements and maintain alignment with corporate goals and division business imperatives.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET Accredited curriculum is required or applicable equivalent training and education. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred. At least Eight (8) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience in large, modern power plants dealing with design, construction, operation and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation and control systems. Experience must include the development of detailed engineering and technical specifications, detailed engineering budgetary estimates, evaluation and analysis of electrical components, and troubleshooting of complex engineering problems.

Essential Functions
  • Creates detailed plans of equipment or process evaluation, testing and monitoring programs up to three years into the future.
  • Checks proposed engineering design modification developed by other engineers within the department to ensure the completeness and applicability of the design.
  • Conducts or leads others in design studies for process systems or equipment.
  • Prepares or leads others into the development of technical specifications, pricing documents, bidder’s lists, bid evaluation criteria and project cost estimates for process systems, equipment or maintenance projects.
  • Advises other department engineers on technical/engineering design criteria.
  • Conducts analysis of complex plant operation or maintenance problems which could lead to design changes, alternate equipment selection, different operating practices or a combination thereof. Make recommendations based on the analysis results.
  • Conducts economic evaluation associated with equipment proposals or alternative practices.
  • Reviews and comments when assigned the lead responsibility for an analysis or evaluation.
  • Conducts operating or maintenance feasibility studies of complex electrical/I&C engineering conditions and systems.
  • Acts as a technical advisor to both the plant operation and maintenance groups.
  • Conducts analysis of electrical equipment failures to determine the source and preventative action.
  • Takes a proactive approach regarding personal safety, safety of others and complies with all OSHA and SECI safety rules. Must complete all necessary online or classroom safety courses as directed. Must participate in safety briefings and meetings.
  • Takes a proactive approach regarding environmental rules and regulations governing the operation of the plant. Must complete all necessary online or classroom environmental courses as directed. Required to immediately report any, and all, environmental reportable incidents.
  • Assists in the creation and updating of ten-year project plan.
  • Evaluates bid proposals and makes recommendations for award of contract.
  • Leads multidisciplinary project team to complete development, detailed engineering as well as construction planning and execution activities for generation projects.
  • Oversees performance of contracted engineering, coordinates all contractor and owner’s engineering interfaces, and ensures projects are completed according to project construction drawings, specifications, schedule, quality and performance requirements.
  • Performs other duties as applicable to the position or as assigned.
  • NERC Compliance: Performs NERC Compliance Program roles if/ as designated in Seminole's Standard Ownership Matrix (SOM) including ongoing evidence retention in "audit-ready" form. You should also be familiar with Seminole's Enterprise Internal Compliance Program (ENT‑GCD‑RGC‑EP‑054) to further your understanding of Seminole's compliance program and your duties and responsibilities in the SOM.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to work and access all locations of the plant and grounds. Must be able to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds. Must be able to follow established protective measures including wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Working Conditions

Some travel and work outside of normal business hours. While working in certain areas of the plant, there is the potential for exposure to hazards typical of an industrial working environment.
